The president's tweet came just days after De Niro declared, "f-k Trump" while onstage at Sunday's Tony Awards.

"It's no longer 'down with Trump, ' it's 'f**k Trump!'" De Niro said.

However the American President, who has never been shy at rebuking his critics, took to Twitter on Tuesday to respond to the Raging Bull star.

The Tony Awards, the highest honor for Broadway, witnessed additional drama Sunday night when Hollywood legend Robert De Niro dropped an expletive about U.S. President Donald Trump, triggering wide controversy.

Trump defended himself against De Niro's attack by praising the economy under his watch.

His comments were bleeped by CBS, which carried the ceremony, though they brought a standing ovation from the audience. In January of this year, the actor called Trump a "f**king idiot" in a profanity-laced rant.

This is not the first time that De Niro has made his thoughts on Trump known.

I watched Robert De Niro too, and as a doctor I can emphatically say that he has much greater mental faculties than you on your best day, Mr. President. He has recently appeared multiple times on "Saturday Night live", playing Special Counsel Robert Mueller who's investigating the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump's De Niro sentiment was expressed just one hour after he had tweeted, "Heading back home from Singapore after a truly fantastic visit".

De Niro again criticized Trump in April during the opening night of the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.

"It's a disgrace. And I apologize to Justin Trudeau and the other people at the G7".
