The Last of Us: Part II has been attracting criticism for its violence ever since its Paris Games Week trailer past year, and this week's E3 2018 demo prompted a similar backlash. It takes place in a lawless, post-apocalyptic future where a mutant fungus has infected millions of humans, turning them into violent, zombie-like monsters. On top of that, enemies appear to be more coordinated now, and Naughty Dog's overhauled engine looks fantastic. And that brings us to that kiss. Moments later, she's led to the dance floor by a female friend - Nina.

The action sequence ends with a machete to the throat as the visual fades back to the dance with Ellie's love interest.

The trailer opens with Ellie at a party, as she watches a young woman, Dina, dancing. The game has been described as still linear, but the environments are purportedly larger, as Naughty Dog has said it wants to erase the traditional separation between combat and exploration areas. The gameplay was from the campaign, which makes sense - it's the selling point on The Last of Us - but some fans might have been anxious that multiplayer has not yet been mentioned. "We say "engaging". It needs to be engaging".
