The trend of big screen smartphones has been quite popular with brands like Apple and Samsung offering a "Plus" size variants of their annual flagships.

The same report also states that Samsung is in the final stages of full-scale production as Huawei is in the process of verifying samples.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 is expected to come with a 6.38-inch screen, while one of the three new iPhones later this year is rumored to feature a 6.46-inch screen.

As per a report, Huawei has placed an order with Samsung Displays for 6.9-inch AMOLED panels that are intended for devices to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2018 or in early 2019.

It is pretty clear that smartphones with a large footprint are here to stay. We'll know more as 2018 progresses, and also discover whether Huawei is planning to use this screen on a Mate phone, or an entirely new line altogether.

Given the OLED nature of the panel and its size, it looks like the upcoming smartphone from Huawei will be a flagship device.

Right now, Huawei hasn't confirmed any details about the Mate 20, be it its launch timeline or hardware specs. This means that there is a possibility that these panels are for the Mate 20. In 2017, the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro arrived in October, suggesting we should expect the replacement phones to come around the same time this year. The report notes that the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro phones feature 5.8-inch and 6.1-inch displays, while the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro have 5.9-inch and 6-inch screens, respectively.

A new rumor suggests the screen could be 6.9 inches, making it nearly as large as the likes of the Nexus 7 and other 7-inch tablets.
