He was named to head the president's National Economic Council in April, a month after his predecessor in the job, Gary Cohn, quit in protest over Trump's decision to go ahead with the tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

Larry Kudlow, the National Economic Council director, was released from the hospital Wednesday after suffering a heart attack earler this week, the White House announced.

She says doctors say Kudlow's recovery "is going very well" and the president and his aides are happy Kudlow is back home and they "look forward to seeing him back to work soon".

His doctors expect Larry will make a full and speedy recovery.

Minutes before Trump met with North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Singapore, the president tweeted, "Our Great Larry Kudlow, who has been working so hard on trade and the economy, has just suffered a heart attack".

Kudlow accompanied Trump this weekend to the annual G-7 meeting in Quebec, where the president traded barbs with the leaders of Canada, Germany and France over trade. "He should pull back on his statements".

For five years before his White House appointment in March, Kudlow hosted a CNBC show on business and politics. He previously served in the Reagan administration and emerged as a leading evangelist for tax cuts and smaller government.
