Lawmaker cautions against sex with foreigners

The comments, made the day before the worldwide soccer tournament is set to begin in Russia, come from Tamara Pletnyova; the Russian politician who oversees that country's Family, Women, and Children Affairs Committee in the lower house of parliament.

Perhaps she was anxious that the women would face a future of single parenthood, but then the lawmaker said that it would be fine if they slept with foreigners who were the same race.

The World Cup hosted by Russian Federation could boost the number of young women falling pregnant, the top politician warned, adding: 'I hope they get something clear in their heads regarding foreigners.

Speaking with a Moscow radio station, Pletnyova said that the World Cup presented a danger in that it could lead to a rise in the number of single mothers.

"It's the children who suffer... and have suffered since the Soviet era".

"If it's another race, then it's even worse", Pletnyova continued.

Asked if the World Cup could boost Russia's birth rate - a key goal for President Vladimir Putin - Pletneva replied: "We should be giving birth to our own children". I'm not a nationalist, but nonetheless.

She said that children risked being "abandoned and just left with their mother;" or, alternatively, being taken overseas by their fathers, urging women to marry "Russian citizens".

"Even if they get married, they'll take them away, then she doesn't know how to get back", Ms Pletnyova said on radio station Govorit Moskva. "Then they come to me in the committee, these crying girls, because the child has been shipped away, taken and so on". "I want to see them build good families, live in harmony, have children and raise them, this is what I would like to see".

However, her comments drew both criticism and ridicule. "I hope not", she said.

'We're not in America or Europe.

"Those who get harassed are probably the ones who want it themselves and give the occasion for it", she said in March, claiming that introducing laws in Russian Federation for the offense is "excessive".

The 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation kicks off Thursday, and while most of us will be focused on cheering for our favorite teams, local women are being advised to keep something else in mind: don't have sex with foreigners.
