Navarro now regrets the "inappropriate" language he used, he admitted at a Wall Street Journal event on Tuesday.

Canada is the U.S.'s largest trading partner, and the USA economy would struggle to make up for Canada's absence, Heyman noted.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro apologized for his comment about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on "Fox News Sunday".

Corker isn't seeking re-election in this fall's USA midterm elections and has railed against his fellow senators who are headed to the polls and anxious about their electoral success for not standing up to Trump publicly.

"The next morning, on Fox News, my job - my mission - was to send a very strong signal of strength".

"I do think it's an abuse of presidential authority to use the 232 waiver, and I've tried to pass a piece of legislation on the floor to counter that", Corker said after the meeting with Freeland.

"I have made it very clear to the president that it is not something we relish doing, but it is something we absolutely will do", he said.

At the G7 summit in Canada last weekend, Trump left early and flew out in Air Force One and Trudeau held a press conference where he was critical of the metal tariffs and said Canada "will not be pushed around" by the U.S.

Those remarks then sparked a Twitter outburst from Trump in which he called Trudeau "so indignant". It's that Mr. Trump didn't understand he put the Canadian PM in a position where he had to.

Corker said there's no question Trump has damaged relations with Canada, but he hoped cooler heads would prevail. Among other things, she said the government should be preparing to keep pace with corporate tax cuts and tax breaks south of the border.

Freeland was on the Hill to speak to members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where she got the backing of senators, who stressed the shared military sacrifice Canadians have made alongside U.S. troops, security cooperation and the deeply intertwined economic ties.
