The games will be played in 16 cities.

Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton are now the only Canadian cities that could host matches.

"A lot of hard work has really paid off by US soccer, [the] Mexican Soccer Federation and the Canadian Soccer Federation to bring it to all three host countries for the very first time in World Cup history".

Morocco secured 65 votes, with the one remaining going to "none of the bids".

Arturo Sarukhan, a diplomat who first proposed the idea of a joint Mexico-United States bid in 2010 when he was Mexico's ambassador in Washington, said he believed at the time it would show how Mexico's relationship with the United States "had changed and matured".

While Portland is known for its tremendous support of soccer, the city doesn't have a stadium that would support the attendance numbers expected for a World Cup game.

As an Italian-Canadian, however, the news that the North American bid had been selected for the 2026 World Cup hit Filato in a particularly soft spot when it arrived at around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Mexico-born soccer player Luis Martinez hopes to play in the 2026 World Cup but isn't sure whether he'd rather play for Mexico or Canada.

What time is the World Cup on and where can I watch it in Hong Kong?

President Donald Trump welcomed the news, tweeting: "The U.S., together with Mexico and Canada, just got the World Cup". Canada will finally get the chance to host the World Cup. The U.S. hosted once in 1994. An opening ceremony before the match will feature Will Smith singing Live It Up, the official anthem of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

"Today, I'm 17 years old and I play for the (Canadian) men's national team. And my dream is to some day compete in the World Cup, maybe even in my home town of Edmonton".

This was the first World Cup vote since 2010, when the rights to host the 2018 and 2022 tournaments were awarded to Russian Federation and Qatar respectively.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin echoed Gill's sentiments, adding that England's bid could be further enhanced if it partnered with some of their neighbours, as the U.S., Mexico and Canada did.

Catlett expects discussions with U.S. Soccer over Jacksonville's potential role in supporting events to start within the next two to three months.

It may still be eight years away, but the expectation of seeing Canada co-hosting, and actually playing in, a men's World Cup is already palpable.

US president Donald Trump tweeted his congratulations, in between tweets on OPEC oil prices and how cutting military exercises in South Korea will "save a fortune".
