Russian Federation defeats Saudi Arabia 5-0

The joint bid had been the front-runner for the 48-team tournament from the moment a North American coalition was first mooted two years ago, and there have been spells when it has looked like the only credible candidate.

Canada, along with the United States and Mexico, is part of the United Bid, trying to bring the World Cup back to North America for the first time since 1994. Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege.

"We are all united in football, the handsome game transcends borders and cultures". Football today is the only victor. "Morocco would have beaten them".

Portland was not chosen as one of the finalists to host World Cup matches.

Just to add to the complexity, there was a third option for all voters: neither Morocco or United and we would have had to start a new bidding process. The US proposed hosting 60 out of the 80 games in 2026. Substitute Denis Cheryshev scored twice - the first after a piece of skill that would have graced a Lionel Messi highlights reel - and the second a superb shot in stoppage time.

Why Did The "United" Bid Win? .

The main factor at play here seems to be money.

It followed a campaign centered around record crowds, existing venues and a forecast revenue of $14.3 billion (£10.6 billion/€12.1 billion).

How Will The Tournament Work? .

Soccer teams from 32 nations are descending on Russian Federation to spar over the FIFA World Cup title.

We've got our top talent on hand from England, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Australia and Africa - many of whom will be based out in Russian Federation for the tournament - to analyse each and every one of the 64 matches. The others would then be split between Canada and Mexico. There is also no National Football League stadium within Portland that could be used.

But which cities and stadiums will host games at the tournament is still being determined.

There will not be many occasions when Saudi Arabia's players have enjoyed 62 per cent of the possession on the home turf of a European opponent and yet for much of the first half, as the world watched Russian Federation kick-off its own tournament, the team in green had the ball. Another three are cities that will have expansion teams coming into MLS.
