Saudi Crown Prince heads to Russian Federation for World Cup

Safe, rational and bountifully lucrative as the Federation Internationale de Football Association decision is to have the 2026 World Cup hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, it is also disappointing for romantics fancying another tournament in Africa - and laced with contradictions, too.

The winning bid, which should feature 60 out of 80 Games in the U.S., will mark the return of football's showpiece event to North American soil for the first time since 1994.

The public vote took place in Moscow, where the 2018 soccer championship begins on Thursday. This came in response to an invitation from President Vladimir Putin.

Cameroon's representative to FIFA, Kevin Njomo, said the three-nation bid "was strong and if it was just the United States..."

They even highlighted restrictions on weapons in Morocco in an apparent dig at gun crime in the United States and Mexico.

He added, "People have a soft spot for Mexico, especially looking at Mexico as a little bit under-developed and giving them a chance".

A successful North American bid would likely also give the Canadian national team an automatic berth into the 2026 tournament.

While Canada has never hosted-or even qualified for-the men's World Cup, it can count on its more experienced co-hosts and current NAFTA partners.

The Englishmen's first match of the World Cup kicks off on 18 June, when they take on Tunisia.

Heavy defeats against Brazil and France in March set alarm bells ringing for Russian fans and their 1-1 draw against Turkey last Tuesday means they head into the World Cup without a victory in their last seven matches. Mario Ritter was the editor.
