Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Peel Region

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for a large swath of the province including Toronto, Hamilton, Halton, Peel, York and Durham regions, London, Caledonia, Barrie and Peterborough.

Several lines of thunderstorms moved through southern Ontario Wednesday afternoon, resulting in power outages and reports of damage.

The watch covered all of Waterloo region, Guelph and Wellington county.

Environment Canada has warned the main threat is "damaging" gusts of wind of 90 to 100 km per hour which can "toss loose objects, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicle".

"Hail and locally heavy rain are also possible".

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from 14 kilometres northeast of South River to 10 kilometres south of MacTier to 10 kilometres northeast of Blyth, moving east at 70 km/h. A warning means severe weather is imminent or occurring.
