Why Julen Lopetegui was appointed — Real Madrid

Massimiliano Allegri admits he turned down the Real Madrid job, before they appointed Julen Lopetegui.

When asked if he had rejected Madrid, Allegri told Sky Sport Italia: "Let's say I said yes to Juventus".

Allegri also hinted that he had been contacted by Chelsea regarding the possibility of replacing Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge.

Zinedine Zidane was heavily interested in bringing Hazard to Madrid but after the legendary Frenchman announced that he will be stepping down from the La Liga club from his managerial position there seems to be a stall in negotiations.

He explained: "I thanked Florentino Perez, who called me, but I had given my word to the club [Juventus]".

"I thanked Florentino for the offer but said I couldn't accept it out of the respect I owed to Juventus".

"It was a decision I'd already taken, and even if other things can happen in life I'd say that I made the decision to stay at Juventus and respected what I'd said, without considering other options". "I simply informed this to all of those who came looking for me. I will look to continue the improvements that we began four years ago, alongside [Beppe] Marotta, [Fabio] Paratici, [Pavel] Nedved and the president". "Agnelli is very ambitious".

Allegri says he is not closing the door on Higuaín's possible departure: "Juve is strong enough to accommodate those who want to leave". Forcing a player to stay against their will is always negative.

"So then it was just a matter of guessing and nobody gave out Julen Lopetegui's name forward because we all thought he was focusing on the World Cup and he's got a new contract with the national side".
