Trump helps take down Mark Sanford

A spokesman for the House speaker, Paul Ryan, told the Guardian that "the speaker supports Mark Sanford in the race tonight".

The primary vote could mark the conclusion of a stunning fall for Sanford, whose scandal-pocked career almost ended in 2009, when he acknowledged having a secret extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina while serving as South Carolina's governor.

Archie Parnell of Sumter, who almost won the 5th District's seat in the U.S. House for Democrats in a 2017 special election, was left for dead by party leaders in May after news broke that he had physically abused his ex wife in the 1970s.

Comstock got a surprisingly low 61% of the vote in her primary against a little-known challenger who attacked her willingness to criticize Trump.

Make that cult, according to Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee.

With his late entry into the race, Trump let Sanford know that has not gone unnoticed.

But Trump's preference for populist candidates like Corey Stewart, the Confederate-statue-supporting Republican who won the GOP nomination for Senate in Virginia on Tuesday, increasingly seems to be remaking the GOP, if not Congress, in his image.

Trump celebrated Sanford's defeat on Twitter, claiming success in ousting a foe.

This result is the first defeat of Sanford's remarkable career. When he was Lt. Governor, McMaster was the first statewide elected official anywhere in America to endorse and campaign for President Trump in the 2016 presidential primaries. "It was the normal stream of consciousness that's long on hyperbole and short on facts". In July 2016, shortly after wrapping up the Republican nomination and hoping to unify the party before the convention, Trump paid a high profile visit to congressional Republicans on Capitol Hill. Stewart, an actual Trump supporter, has the support of the president going into the general election against Sen.

In more than two decades of politics and in spite of one of the great sex scandals in political history, Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) had never lost an election.

Arrington defeated Sanford, who often clashed with Trump, 51 percent to 47 percent, after the president tweeted he was "nothing but trouble".

"Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA. He is better off in Argentina", the president wrote.

But Arrington, who works for a defense contractor, has been able to exploit that trait, pointing out Sanford's call for Trump to release his tax returns, his vote against Trump's border wall proposal, and his calling proposed tariffs on aluminum and steel "an experiment with stupidity". Congrats to Katie Arrington!

True, in some communities, the only local races on the ballot - many of which drove turnout - were Republican. Sanford lost his primary Tuesday night. "We have entered the twilight zone.", Ribble tweeted Wednesday morning. In this case, the effect will prove salutary, I believe.

The year of the woman continues. In her victory speech Tuesday night, Arrington embraced the president wholeheartedly and implored the party to stand by him. "We are the party of President Donald J. Trump", she said. But he has accused the president of contributing to the coarsening of the national political discourse, and that turned the primary into a test of whether loyalty to Trump is more important to Republican voters than a lawmaker's record. The Koch Brothers have also been openly opposing President Trump's efforts to renegotiate trade deals.
