While winning the first match of the Fifa World Cup can send fans into a delirium, doing so against reigning world champions is sure to send fans into a frenzy. While Mexico has twice hosted the World Cup, and last week won a joint bid with the USA and Canada for the 2026 games, its team has never progressed beyond quarterfinals showings in 1970 and 1986.

It was the only goal Mexico would need. "Our team has experience of dealing with losses, the next match will be decisive and we have to win it". Having already beaten the North American side in last year's Confederations Cup 4-1 their confidence was high but everything came tumbling down in Moscow, Russia.

"I'm actually quite sad and quite surprised", she said. "We have to get six points from the next games".

After wasting a handful of first-half chances while living dangerously in their own half, Hirving Lozano's 35th-minute strike on the break proved just reward.

Germany's Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich in action with Mexico's Hector Moreno, Raul Jimenez and Jesus Gallardo.

Timo Werner could have scored when he picked up a ball near the penalty spot, but his shot went straight to Ochoa.

The street parties are still ongoing Sunday afternoon in Mexico. Kimmich's absence meant Ozil was left trying to stop Lozano for Mexico's opening goal.

Argentina were held by Iceland, Brazil by Switzerland, France squeezed past Australia and Germany lost to Mexico.

Mexico's next opponent is South Korea.
