Hickenlooper: No state resources for immigration separations

Of course, if Colorado voters elect a Republican in November, another executive order could undo the program. Instead, it will join the other states in invoking a provision under the Clean Air Act that allows them to follow California in continuing to pursue the aggressive goals set during the Obama administration. "This executive order calls for the state to adopt air quality standards that will protect our quality of life in Colorado", said Governor John Hickenlooper in a news release.

The announcement was met with concern from Colorado's auto dealers, mostly because it leans too much on another state's programs, where standards and vehicle market share are much different.

The executive order comes as the EPA is working on a new rule to replace the Obama-era policy that allowed states to set stronger standards, arguing that the current regulations are too stringent and unattainable for vehicle companies.

In January, Colorado adopted an electric vehicle plan aimed at promoting a transition from gasoline-power vehicles to electric vehicles (EV) in the state. According to a report released last week by E2, a group of business leaders and others who advocate for environmental policies that will not harm the economy, more than 57,000 Coloradans now work in clean energy-related industries. Democrats and immigrant advocacy groups, along with some conservatives, have lambasted the policy. "States are going to need to lead the way on this".

Says Trump: "Not on my watch".

Hickenlooper's executive order said the expected plan by the Environmental Protection Agency to roll back greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency standards could have "serious consequences" for Colorado's effort to meet its own clean energy goals.

The order also calls for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to develop a low emission vehicle program in Colorado and for the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission to adopt the regulations into the Colorado Code of Regulations by December 30, 2018.

"Low emissions vehicles are increasingly popular with consumers and are better for our air", he said. "Every move we make to safeguard our environment is a move in the right direction".

Nevertheless, Hickenlooper's order falls in line with recent announcements in the automotive industry to have dozens of different models of electrified vehicles available to consumers by 2025.

"We're disappointed that the state of Colorado, the governor, or regulatory board or anybody else would cede air quality control regulation to an out-of-state, unelected board in Sacramento (California)", said Tim Jackson, president of the association.

Colorado officials say they are aligning with California because, like that state, Colorado is uniquely vulnerable to air pollution because of its topography.
