‘I don’t care’: Melania’s controversial coat to visit migrant children

Ahead of her border visit, Melania Trump dons a jacket that says 'I really don't care.

Journalist Nina Terrero hit out at the First Lady, writing on Twitter: "Melania Trump wears Zara on a visit to a Texas children's shelter in an overture to appear as one of the good people..."

The first lady's spokeswoman said: "It's a jacket".

In public appearances, the first lady has worn designs by Dolce & Gabbana, Del Pozo, Christian Dior, Emilio Pucci, Givenchy and Valentino, often with daringly high Christian Louboutin heels. She felt this would be a good photo op to meet with these children, to see what all the hubbub was about, and she couldn't have screwed it up any bigger.

Workers told the First Lady that the center deals primarily with unaccompanied minors.

With the words, "Welcome!"

The first lady's comments were noted in a White House pool report. Federal agencies are working to set up a centralized family-reunification center in Port Isabel, Texas, the official said, and it isn't clear how numerous 500 children are still being detained with their families.

She also said the first lady's visit with the children in Texas "impacted @flotus greatly".

The awkwardness of the situation wasn't lost on many online, including Dictionary.com, who said it showed indifference.

They had signed an American flag to give the first lady as a gift, but she made a decision to sign it and leave it for the kids to keep. The other children were placed there after they crossed into the US alone. She could have bought any other shirt.

Mrs Trump met doctors, social workers and those providing medical and educational services to some of the 2,300 children split from their families on the US-Mexico border. Whatever the reasoning is, whatever the rational, one thing is for certain: We no longer have to pretend that Melania Trump is not like her husband, is not like her step-kids, she is just as bad as every one of them. They attend school five days a week and have a variety of activities.

Images and recordings of distressed children held in enclosures akin to cages have sparked global fury. Was it insensitive of her to wear it whilst visiting detained children?

She joined about 20 mayors from cities across the country to call for the immediate reunification of immigrant children with their families. Trump had said only Congress could fix the problem and he specifically pointed a finger at Democrats.

Maybe we should just go back to the original market for the jacket to find its meaning for Melania Trump: young women who want to make a statement but aren't able to voice it publicly - so they wear their ennui on their backs.
