Legendary Pantera drummer and co-founder Vinnie Paul has died at age 54.

Vinnie formed Pantera with his late brother Dimebag Darrell in 1981.

The band was nominated for Grammys in 1995 and 2001, and Pantera's third LP, Far Beyond Driven, debuted at number one in the United States back in 1994. During his tenure in Hellyeah, Paul served as a beacon of strength in the wake of tragedy for many of his peers, including Slipknot's Corey Taylor, who found the drummer's advice particularly powerful after the death of his bandmate Paul Gray. They recorded two other top 5 albums, The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) and Reinventing the Steel (2000).

The band was nominated for Grammys in 1995 and 2001.

Following Pantera's dissolution in 2003, Paul and Darrell formed Damageplan.

Tragedy struck later that year when Dimebag was shot and killed onstage during a Damageplan gig in OH on December 8 by gunman Nathan Gale, who also killed three more people and injured seven others that night.

He was also known recently as a member of the supergroup Hellyeah.

Paul was born in March 11, 1964 in Abilene, Texas.
