"It was anticipated at one stage that he could leave for Liverpool".

Real Madrid hot prospect Asensio is now at the 2018 World Cup with Spain after an impressive rise under Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.

Asensio has failed to nail down a regular starting place at the Bernabeu and will likely struggle even more for playing time if Los Blancos turn their eyes to Fekir, as has been suggested by Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas this weekend.

Fans are desperate to land Asensio, regardless of what that would mean for the Fekir chase.

Now, the Lyon President is adamant he wants Fekir to stay.

The Reds were rumoured to be on the brink of completing a deal for the Frenchman before the World Cup, but medical problems and an attempt to lower their bid prompted Lyon to release a statement saying that Fekir would not be sold this summer.

"He was supposed to go to Liverpool at a certain point, I gave a green light, [but] things did not happen because they lasted too long".

After confessing to pulling the plug on the deal due to discussions dragging on for too long, Aulas hinted that a return to negotiations could be revived after the World Cup. Nabil is an exceptional player, he is on the map. the efficiency, to keep the ball, absolutely unique. I have always listened to the players as a priority, the players are my sons, I hope he will stay.

"But if he absolutely wishes to leave, then we will try to find the biggest club to match his talent".
