Pantera drummer and co-founder Vinnie Paul dies at age 54

Pantera co-founder and drummer Vinnie Paul is dead at age 54, the heavy metal rock band has announced.

Since 2006, Paul was the drummer for Hellyeah, a heavy metal supergroup that also includes Mudvayne vocalist Chad Gray and Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell.

'No further details are available at this time. The family has asked for everyone to respect their privacy at this time.

The Texas-born Paul formed Pantera with his brother, guitar virtuoso "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, in 1981.

Abbott was shot and killed in 2004 during a concert in Columbus, Ohio, with his new band Damageplan.


Following the end of Pantera, Paul formed Damageplan with his brother in 2003. The band had a number one album in 1994 and earned four Grammy nominations, but disbanded in 2003 amid rumours of a rift. Vinnie Paul showed us nothing but love. Born in Abilene Texas, Paul now drummed for the supergroup Hellyeah, which included Mudvayne vocalist Chad Gray and Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell.

The news was confirmed on Pantera's Facebook page, which issued a short statement this morning.

The band was reportedly working on an album when Paul passed away.

After the death of his brother Darrell, the group disbanded and Vinnie took an 18-month hiatus, unsure whether he would return to music after his brother's death.
