Its sequel didn't beat out those two titles, but Fallen Kingdom's opening was still a promising start for the dinosaur empire's latest entry.

Refresh for latest...: Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom scored a hat-trick this weekend, taking the No. 1 position at the worldwide box office for the third frame in a row. Also, this opening is Universal Pictures second biggest domestic opening ever after Jurassic World in 2015.

If there is a sign that Jurassic Park franchise may eventually go the way of the real dinosaurs, the gaudy debut is still well short of its predecessor, Jurassic World, which opened with $208.8 million in June of that year.

This opening comes after an incredibly massive marketing and media push on behalf on the film. The marketing budget for this film was reportedly more than double that of the first, but it still couldn't cross the original in ticket sales.

"If this "dino-mite" box office weekend proves anything, it's that the movie theater experience is here to stay and is no danger of becoming extinct", said Dergarabedian.

No one in Hollywood expected the fifth chapter in the "Jurassic World" franchise to perform the way 2015's "Jurassic World" did, but the weekend performance did exceed industry projections that the movie would earn between $130 million to $140 million. What did you think about it?
