Belgium dump Brazil out of World Cup with 2-1 win

Five-time champions Brazil were aiming for their sixth World Cup championship but their 2018 campaign came to a disappointing end as Belgium stunned the Seleção out of the 2018 Russia World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 victory on Friday, July 6th.

But the other real contenders in Murphy's (and most of the world's) book are Brazil and Belgium, which face each other on the field at 2 pm ET Friday. Football's getting tougher and tougher all the time.

Brazil had their opportunities against Belgium, but the likes of Neymar and Philippe Coutinho were unable to inspire a comeback.

"The last, and only time Brazil and Belgium played each other in World Cup was way back in 2002 when the South Americans were the eventual winners", Barreto added. But, it had also come at a cost, with several players sustaining injuries.

In the absence of Danilo on the right side of defence, Fagner has stepped up exceedingly well, making the position his own with some solid showings. "Filipe Luis played very well in those matches, but Marcelo is coming back", he said.

Willian will be going all out against Eden Hazard and Belgium when they meet in the quarterfinals of this year's World Cup.

Belgium will be without defender Thomas Meunier for the semifinals after tripping Neymar and earning a second yellow card of the tournament.

Belgium made a flying start, perhaps aided by a change of tactics and personnel.

Fernandinho will be replacing him in the starting Xi and that shows the amount of talent they have in the squad.

Here is the schedule for the two days of the 2018 World Cup quarter-final games. "Still two games to go!" The Manchester City star injured his ankle in training. The Belgian back-three though, will need to much improved after a disastrous showing against Japan. The Selecao were missing the influence of Casemiro in midfield and after conceding twice, they never really looked like they had enough to win this game.

Belgium eliminated Brazil by successfully fusing the attacking potency of De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku with the creativity of Eden Hazard and the goalkeeping exploits of Thibaut Courtois.

"For me, Brazil are the best team in the tournament and without a doubt the biggest threat from open play".

"Neymar is one of the biggest exponents of. decisive one-versus-one situations, so we'll have to keep an eye on him and allow our players to have a bigger role in the game".

Belgium is now on a 24-match unbeaten streak. Fernandinho's trailing arm inadvertently helped Belgium captain Vincent Kompany's header land in his own net in the 13th minute. This is where Fernandinho will be crucial for Brazil.

And Augusto could have levelled moments later, instead dragging his 20-yard shot just wide as Brazil piled the pressure on Belgium in the last 10 minutes. As mentioned before, 2006 by France, 2010 by the Netherlands and in 2014, the infamous 7-1 loss to Germany in the semi-finals! Therefore, it's worth chancing the Belgian's to come out on top here as quite substantial underdogs, while for a little extra value it's worth noting that Brazil have trailed at the break in three of their last four competitive defeats at major tournaments and if they are slow out of the blocks again that could prove more decisive this time.

One thing that seems to be certain is that the match should serve up plenty of goals.
