EPA Chief Scott Pruitt Resigns, Trump Tweets

Among Wheeler's clients were utility giant Xcel Energy and uranium miner Energy Fuels Resources Inc., reported NPR.

Despite all the controversy that's surrounded Pruitt, Trump's send-off was full of praise, claiming that Pruitt did an "outstanding job" and that he would "always be thankful" to Pruitt for his work. Trump says Pruitt is "a terrific guy".

Senator Bernie Sanders, Democrat from Vermont: "Scott Pruitt was the worst EPA administrator in the history of the agency". "He made swamp creatures blush with his shameless excesses".

"Given Pruitt's complete failure to protect our clean air and water, and with 13 open federal investigations into his work, the only question is why this took so long". Jim Inhofe if he decides not to run again in 2020.

One of the energy companies that the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency worked for as a lobbyist is seeking contracts from the agency, raising questions among environmentalists about whether he can put his past behind him as he becomes the nation's top environmental protector. Instead, with Pruitt's windy, scandal-ridden journey finally come to an end, Wheeler - and his adversaries - will likely return their focus to the environment.

He's a former coal industry lobbyist who fought government regulations. "But let's not forget he was carrying out President Trump's policies".

If the rights of religious conservatives like him aren't protected, Pruitt said darkly, "it leads to anarchy, it leads to rebellion", something he said would happen in the coming decades.

Wheeler has largely stayed out of the limelight and previously told the Washington Examiner he has no interest in taking the EPA administrator role. "He is somebody who has been preparing for a position of responsibility like this really for all of his life", says Scott Segal, an attorney who has been working on environmental policy for a quarter-century.

He also tasked members of his staff with personal assignments, including finding him another apartment, getting his tickets to sporting events and trying to help his wife find a job. Emails obtained by the Sierra Club environmental group showed Pruitt had an aide contact the chief executive of a fast-food chain about his wife becoming a franchise owner.

She then began to detail some of her issues with the EPA. Democrats accused him of endless misconduct.

Like Trump, Pruitt voiced skepticism about mainstream climate science and was a fierce critic of the Paris climate agreement.

But at the same time, Pruitt was one of the most effective implementers of the President's agenda.

Even in his comments after the resignation, however, Trump expressed real fondness for Pruitt.

Mr Pruitt sparked controversy previous year when he contradicted his own organisation's advice by saying he did not believe that carbon dioxide is a main contributor to global warming.

Pruitt also rankled some Republican lawmakers, including in Midwest corn states, with his efforts to overhaul a U.S. policy requiring biofuels like corn-based ethanol in gasoline.

Numerous Democratic lawmakers and even some fellow Republicans had called for the resignation of Pruitt.

But despite boasts of slashing red tape and promoting job creation, Pruitt had a mixed record of producing real-world results. "As we have proven again and again, when the EPA threatens New Yorkers' health and environment, we will take the agency to court - and we will win".
