New Suzuki Jimny launched in Japan, to arrive in other markets soon

Instead, Suzuki has kept the Jimny's design distinctively retro, with a tall boxy shape, flat clamshell bonnet, wide front grille and round headlights. The auto rides on 15-inch black alloy wheels shod with 195/80 section tires and gets flared wheel arches in black and side steps. It offers a ground clearance of 200 mm.

Inside, there's a much more up to date influence with a modern dashboard layout. Suzuki claims that it's still a functional and straightforward environment though, and that the switches are all large enough to operate while wearing gloves. There's also Suzuki's familiar Bluetooth Smartphone Linkage Display Audio unit with a 7-inch touchscreen on top models.

Despite its small dimension it should be reasonably practical with a 377 litre boot once the rear seats are folded. We look forward to doing just that when we get a new Jimny for review.

The Jimny employs a 0.66-litre three-cylinder petrol engine produces 64 PS at 6,500 rpm and 103 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. The new engine is physically smaller than the old one and it's more powerful too, offering 75kW at 6000rpm (up from 62.5kW) and 130Nm of torque at 4000rpm (up from 110Nm at 4100rpm). This is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission or 4-speed automatic transmission. CO2 stands at 154g/km and 170g/km respectively. A low range transfer box is also provided.

An approach angle of 37 degrees, breakover angle of 28 degrees, and departure angle of 49 degrees is how the little mountain goat from Japan stacks up off the beaten path.

The all-new Suzuki Jimny is the fourth generation of Suzuki's iconic off-roader. Adding to the off-road character of the Jimny, the rear axle of the mini-SUV benefits from three-link suspension with coil springs.

Suzuki claims that the new vehicle should boast better on road manners too though, promising improved ride quality thanks to the more rigid ladder frame, plus a new steering damper which aims to minimise jolts and vibration through the steering wheel. Other safety features include six airbags, hill hold and hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring system, and selectable four-wheel drive with low-range.
