Croatia has beaten host Russian Federation 4-3 in a penalty shootout to advance to a World Cup semifinal against England.

Zlatko Dalic's men needed a penalty shootout victory of their own against Denmark in the last round after Luka Modric missed a spot kick in normal time.

Croatia is in the World Cup semifinals for the second time and first since 1998.

Earlier, NAIJ.com had reported how England's Three Lions defeated Sweden 2-0 margin courtesy of two headed goals from Harry Maguire's 30th minute and Dele Alli's 59th minute during Saturday's quarterfinal fixture to book passage into the semifinals of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

Modric has scored two of Croatia's eight goals en route to the quarter-final, and Rakitic spoke of the 32-year-old's importance in Spanish football.

Ivan Rakitic scored the victor from the spot as Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev dived the opposite direction.

The match went into extra time and Croatian defender, Domagoj Vida, took them 2-1 up at 100 minutes with the added bonus of a salute from the nation's president, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.

Lovren will now come up against Liverpool teammates Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold in Wednesday night's World Cup semi-final.
