Gary Lineker, who was part of that first tournament, allowed his emotions to spill over on television following footage of an interview with the late Sir Bobby Robson about that semi-final failure and England captain Harry Kane wants to channel that feeling among former players as the team look to write a happier ending this time around.

The Three Lions last got to the semi-final at Italia 90, where they fell just short of the final with an extra-time defeat to Germany in the last four.

One day I hope to have children and if I do I'll make sure I take them to Wembley, point out the Harry Maguire statue and tell them of the great warrior's heroics in Russian Federation in the summer of 2018, it'll be a great time.

"I'm proud to make ex-players proud", said Kane.

With six goals so far in the World Cup, Kane is the leader of the England side on and off the pitch, but on Saturday, although he worked hard and led the attack intelligently, he wasn't the hero; England had plenty of heroes.

"We're delighted with the result, but this has put a big dampener on the celebrations for us: while our officer attended a call nearby, this auto was damaged in Borough High Street during the celebrations after the game, it's now off the road to be repaired", they wrote.

The Tottenham striker's goals have taken him to 52 for the season for both club and country. Kane says that although he wasn't born yet to experience the 1990 World Cup, the England squad remain aware of the context of what they have achieved.

"Yes, obviously a lot of us weren't even born yet when [the 1990 World Cup] was happening", Kane added.

"We also feel we've had events on when we've been in camp when some of those guys have been in, when the road was named at St George's after Sir Alf". We wanted to play good football, work hard, play with passion and I feel like we have done that so we are enjoying it.

"After I made that first save from Marcus Berg with the header that was me set for the rest of the game", said Pickford straight after the game to the BBC. "That's what we need if we want to go all the way, so let's do it in the next one".

Maguire has been one of England's best players as they've gone through the Group Stage with wins over Panama and Tunisia before a loss to Belgium, they then beat Colombia on penalties before the Sweden game.
