Nissan admits misconduct in emissions testing procedure

First, says Nissan, tests of exhaust emissions and fuel economy were conducted in ways that deviated from the prescribed testing environment.

As part of a check of exhaust emissions and fuel economy measurement tests within the final vehicle inspection process, Nissan said it discovered "misconduct" carried out for vehicles produced at its domestic vehicle production plants and those of affiliates, except Nissan Motor Kyushu.

"A full and comprehensive investigation of the facts ... including the causes and background of the misconduct, is under way", Nissan said. It made the statement after the market had closed.

Nissan discovered the data falsification during an internal review the company ordered following an inspection scandal past year that forced Nissan to recall 1.2 million vehicles.

Nissan added that the latest revelation does not affect cars that were exported overseas as it applies exclusively to Japanese market requirements. The falsifications came to light as a result of a company-wide compliance audit that was in turn prompted by revelations a year ago of "misconduct" in Nissan's inspection procedures.

Those vehicles were recalled after it became public knowledge that for decades auto inspections had been carried out by uncertified technicians.

The automaker discovered incidents in which vehicle driving speeds and durations, along with external temperatures, had not been in line with Japanese regulations for emissions testing, while testing equipment had not been calibrated properly.

Nissan said the latest misconduct did not compromise the safety of the affected models, and mileage readings were in line with levels presented in product catalogues.

According to now available data, tampering incidents date back to 2013 and involved 10 employees, although Yamauchi said it was possible that older data may show the problem could go back further. The carmaker blamed staffing shortages for the scandal, which caused annual operating profit to slide.
