Italian media report the accident happened in Sardinia where the USA actor is filming his latest TV series, Catch-22.

The newspaper tweeted a photo apparently from the scene, showing a lightly smashed up motorbike and auto, with a caption suggesting the vehicle had been turning and Clooney had made contact with its windscreen.

A fire extinguisher can be seen on the road but no people from the accident were involved.

He is understood to have received treatment at John Paul II hospital, but NBC News report that he has since been discharged.

La Nuova reported he was found to have a slight trauma to the pelvis and bruises to one leg and arm, but his condition was not serious. Local media that had gathered at the hospital said Clooney is believed to have left through a side exit.

George relocated his family to the idyllic Italian island for the summer to direct the forthcoming TV mini series.

Based on Joseph Heller's classic novel, it will be broadcast in the United Kingdom on Channel 4.

The six-part drama is set to air in 2019. Calls and emails to Clooney's spokesman weren't immediately returned.

Clooney has a home with his wife, human rights lawyer Amal, on the Italian mainland, on Lake Como.

Italy is an important place for Amal and George.
