It has a kickstand, metal-construction, support for inking, and comes with Windows 10 S and works with existing Surface accessories.

The Go retains the Surface's 3:2 aspect ratio, while the 10-inch IPS touchscreen sports an 1800 x 1200 resolution. Pre-orders have opened, but actual shipping starts in August. The hinge can extend to 165 degrees for flexibility, allowing users to make it as a tablet or studio mode, and support for type and mouse input with their Signature Type Cover. Some of these may be individuals who always wanted a Surface but couldn't afford it until now, with the base-level tablet on its own costing $399.

The sub-$400 price point is key for Microsoft as it tries to turn its Surface business into a more serious challenger to other computer hardware makers.

Under the hood, the Surface is powered by a 7th-Generation Intel Pentium Gold processor.

The device includes the frequently requested USB-C port in addition to the Surface Connect port, a headphone jack, SD card reader and a built-in stand.

"When we designed this device, we had to ask ourselves what people want and need from a 10" Surface", Microsoft chief product officer Panos Panay wrote in a blog announcing the device.

The sliver of a document provided by Reddit user UniversalACAdapter doesn't provide any details about the device itself, other than the fact that it will feature a Type Cover (which are portable keyboards for the Surface line).

Up to Pentium Gold processor. Just as netbooks outgrew seven-inch form factors to making typing feasible, Microsoft's given Surface Go buyers a path to easier input.

Battery life is rated at 9 hours, which is a bit short compared to the marathon batteries in more recent Surface devices, but we'll have to see how that holds up in real world use. It is also equipped with a USB-C 3.1 port. The software giant kicked off its consumer hardware push in 2012 with the launch of the Surface RT.

The Surface Go runs Windows 10 S, a version of Windows that will only run apps found in the Microsoft Store - a walled-garden approach much in the same vein as Apple.

The budget Surface device is said to be equipped with either 4GB or 8GB of RAM, and will be available with up to 128GB of internal storage.

LTE models and 256GB versions of the Surface Go are slated to go on sale sometime after the August 2 launch of the tablet. A Wi-Fi-only model will arrive first, with LTE-equipped versions launching later in the year.
