There are epic performances in the thrilling Sharp Objects, but the HBO TV show also has some unexpected surprises in store.

Kicking off at 9pm on Sky Atlantic, this series could not sound more promising and here's why. "I really believe Camille needed Amy".

"I'm Dying Up Here", 10 p.m. (SHOWTIME): Season-two finale of drama about stand-up comedians; Ralph and Adam's bad news comes with a silver lining; Roy offers Eddie a big opportunity; Cassie struggles to decide where her loyalty lies.

HBO's description for the series reads: "Based on the book of the same name by The New York Times bestselling author Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl, Dark Places), this eight-episode series tells the story of reporter Camille Preaker (Adams) who returns to her small hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls". The assignment, which reunites Camille with her overbearing mother, Adora (Patricia Clarkson), stepfather, Alan Crellin (Henry Czerny), and half-sister, Amma (Eliza Scanlen), brings back traumatic childhood memories, including the death of Camille's younger sister, Marian (Lulu Wilson), when both were schoolgirls. But, you'll definitely want to catch the riveting performance of Australian actress, Eliza Scanlen, who plays Camille's odd and mysterious half-sister, Amma.

An incredible behind-the-scenes production has made this show one of the most anticipated of the year.

Sharp Objects was created by Marti Noxon (Dietland, UnREAL, Code Black) who serves as showrunner and wrote several episodes, as did Gillian Flynn.

As with "Big Little Lies", the soundtrack of 'Sharp Objects takes centre stage at times with the opening episode featuring everything from Engelbert Humperdinck to Led Zeppelin.

And here's the promo for what's up next on Sharp Objects in episode 2 "Dirt".

The reviews so far have been very positive stateside with Indiewire saying: "Amy Adams is straight fire in HBO's exquisite slow-burn of a horror show".

After the success of Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects has been adapted into a mini-series by HBO, and it's set to premiere today. Sometimes streaming viewers' episodes on HBO start about three minutes earlier than the broadcast time, so you might want to check around 8:57 p.m.
