While Djimon Hounsou, who is best known for his work in films like Amistad and Blood Diamond, is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain Marvel (reprising his role of Korath from Guardians of the Galaxy), he'll now join the ranks of actors who have stepped foot in both the Marvel and DC worlds, as he will now be playing the Wizard who grants Billy Batson his powers in next year's Shazam!

Filming on Shazam! has actually wrapped, but this bit of casting remained under the radar until now.

Although This Is Us actor Ron Cephas Jones was originally cast in this role, Jones left due to a "scheduling conflict" according to the Hollywood trade. (Comic fans will bemusedly note that Hounsou's upcoming Captain Marvel was also the original name of the Shazam! comic book before DC changed the name). Still a kid at heart-inside a ripped, godlike body-Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he skip his social studies test?

Entertainment Weekly has announced that Djimon Hounsou will be part of the Shazam cast as the 3,000-year old sorcerer from Ancient Egypt who uses his powers to fight evil and has been seeking a successor to carry on his mission. Grace Fulton, Cooper Andrews, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand and Faithe Herman are also on board, with Mark Strong as the villainous Doctor Sivana, a frequent foe of Shazam who first appeared opposite the superhero in the pages of Whiz Comics back in 1940. The Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director will step behind the camera with Peter Safran producing.

Dwayne Johnson will not appear as the villain Black Adam in the film and is developing a solo film for the anti-hero as a separate project. By saying the world "Shazam", teenager Billy Batson was transformed into the "world's mightiest mortal" and given extraordinary abilities by ancient gods. There's a good chance we'll be treated to some more footage in Hall H at the convention too, so stay tuned to find out everything we learn about Shazam, arriving in theaters on April 5, 2019.
