DJI Mavic 2 Leak Hints at 360 Sensing and More

We have just received this photo of what would appear to be the first credible photo of the DJI Mavic Pro 2 in the wild, at this time we can not confirm its authenticity but it looks pretty convincing. The company began to push the envelope with the 2016 Mavic Pro that offered 4K video in a portable package.

Reports have also suggested that the upcoming drone could include additional sensors on the bottom and the back, which combined with the existing front and side sensors would provide 360-degree obstacle avoidance. And given DJI's sell for its postponed event mentioned "the bigger picture", it seems logical that the other key addition could be a wide-angle lens.

According to DroneDJ, it received an e-mail that contained what appeared to be the first real photo of the next DJI drone, the DJI Mavic 2.

The Mavic 2 designation on the drone is clear in the leaked image.

Update, 4:35 p.m. PT: DJI has confirmed it planned a July 18 event in NY that has since been postponed. There also seems to be a larger sensor on the drone on the left, whereas the one to the right has a slightly larger one. This could be a huge selling point for the drone in terms of ease-of-use, and DJI has already demonstrated its obstacle-avoidance tech works well on previous models, albeit in a more limited fashion.

Sounds like we're going to have to update our Mavic Air vs. Mavic Pro vs. DJI Spark guide pretty soon. So the Mavic 2, if it doubles down on pro-level features, could be DJI's way of enticing people to spend more. There appears to be cameras and sensors for that goal at the front and sides, and most likely at the bottom and the back of the drone. With the See the Bigger Picture event pushed back, there is no indication on when the drone will hit the market.

If the DJI Mavic 2 leak shows an accurate image, there are still some remaining questions about the next DJI drone.
