It's the second All-Star selection for Springer. The commissioner's office is now in charge of fleshing out each roster to 31 players while making sure that every team has a representative, that the rosters are properly balanced (the league mandates 20 hitters and 12 pitchers in each league), and that unavailable players are replaced.

Former Angel Torii Hunter will manage the U.S. Team, while AAA Salt Lake manager Keith Johnson will serve as its third-base coach.

Boston can send six players to D.C. if Andrew Benintendi can win the Final Vote competition. The American League is 17-3 with one drawn since 1997.

Before the American League and National League play the Midsummer Classic, the rosters have to be staffed. The American League has battled back from a huge deficit and is in a position to take the lead in the series for the first time since 1963.

Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman topped National Leaguers in fan support with more than 4 million votes.

Max Scherzer of the Nationals, Jon Lester of the Cubs and Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets are the top candidates to get the start on the mound for the Senior Circuit, and Scherzer said on the ESPN broadcast that he will not refer to a scouting report as he faces the powerful AL lineup.

"That would be an unbelievable experience no matter when I pitch, just to pitch in front of the home crowd", Scherzer said.

"I'm excited to be around the game's best".

Roberts said Scherzer was "definitely on my radar" but wouldn't reveal his planned starter even though he added, "you can't go wrong with Max taking the baseball at any point".
