Warner Bros. has given the go ahead on Todd Phillips' "Joker" origin film with Joaquin Phoenix closing his deal to star.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the standalone film was picked up by Warner Bros. and will begin filming in NY this September with Phoenix playing Batman's arch-nemesis.

As such, the film is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content than previous DC comic book films, Variety adds.

Leto is still set to play the Joker in the Suicide Squad sequel, as well as a separate standalone movie. Phoenix entered talks to take on the role this past February, but this was far from a done deal as the Oscar-nominated actor had previously been in prolonged talks to lead Marvel's Doctor Strange before ultimately backing out.

Phillips is reportedly co-writing the script (with Scott Silver) in addition to directing the film, whose budget of $55 million puts it more in the realm of conventional crime thrillers than effects-heavy superhero CGI epics.

The Joker is known for both his wit and creative cruelty, so it could be Joaquin Phoenix's turn to show off his villainous side playing the well-known comic book character. I don't really care about the genre, I care about the character and the filmmaker. "So I wouldn't say, hands down, no - I wouldn't do that kind of movie".
