Let's just forget all about this World Cup fever malarkey for a minute of two, shall we?

The Swiss worldwide will leave relegated Stoke City this summer, this much we knew already. Liverpool have been trying to reignite a deal despite a hands-off warning issued before the World Cup.

Liverpool have been long-term admirers of Shaqiri and their interest has been public knowledge for some time know, but the club have finally officially opened talks with the Potters over a potential £13 million transfer.

Shaqiri is now on holiday after participating in the World Cup and recently said his future would soon be resolved as he expressed his desire to continue playing in the Premier League.

Despite finishing in the lucrative Champions League spots, the Reds were quite some distance from threatening eventual Premier League champions, Manchester City, who finished with 25 more points than Jurgen Klopp's side.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager thought he was close to completing the signing of Lyon playmaker Nabil Fekir earlier this summer, only for the move to break down amid concerns over the France international's fitness. Fekir is now part of the French squad which have made it to the World Cup final. It's pretty normal to be aware of clubs being interested.

For now though, it seems Liverpool are prioritising a move for Shaqiri, with developments expected before the end of the week.
