Pompeo to urge mounting pressure on Iran

"In previous round of USA sanctions between 2012 [and] 2015, Iran did its best to ensure security of oil supply to India", Iran's Deputy Ambassador and Charge d'Affaires Massoud Rezvanian Rahaghi said at an event organised by the All India Minorities Front at the Parliament annexe on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump said in May he would pull the United States out of an global accord under which Tehran had agreed to limit its nuclear development in exchange for sanctions relief.

"We are determined to convince the Iranian leadership that this malign behavior won't be rewarded and that the economic situation in the country will not be permitted to be rectified until such time that they become a more normal nation", he said.

Pompeo said that included a "series of sanctions aimed not at the Iranian people, but rather aimed at the single mission of convincing the Iranian regime that its malign behavior is unacceptable".

Iran has criticised India for not making investments in the expansion of the Chabahar port saying that New Delhi will lose "special privileges" if the import of Iranian oil is curtailed. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani inaugurated the first phase of the port project in December.

Although there were no concrete pledges or deadlines, they also vowed efforts to keep open financial channels with Iran, promote export credit cover, and maintain open air, sea, and overland transport links.

"That's the commitment we have had for decades", he said.

Jahangiri said it would be a mistake to think the USA "economic war" against Iran will have no impact, but added: "We will make Americans understand this year that they can not stop Iranian oil sales".

India meets about 11 per cent of its crude requirement through oil imports from Iran and is due to buy 30 million tonnes of oil from Tehran this year. Trump himself has been tweeting that oil suppliers must do more to lower prices ahead of midterm elections this fall.

"America seeks to reduce Iran's oil sales, our vital source of income, to zero", he said, according to Fars news agency.

Shipping to Iran and ports in the country are also coming under the United States sanctions. "... India is trying to make Chabahar port in Iran operational by 2019... opening up of the Chabahar port would make the CIS countries more accessible", the shipping minister said. The Iran sanctions are one of the top reasons for the price rally that has come to bite India's refiners amid surging domestic demand for fuels, so chances are New Delhi will try to secure a waiver.

Pompeo met Abu Dhabi's powerful crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan while on his short trip to the UAE.

India is also expected to convey to the USA the importance of the Chabahar port project considering that it can be a major link for trade with war-ravaged Afghanistan.
