‘The Favourite’ Trailer Serves Up Yorgos Lanthimos Madness in a Powdered Wig

The film comes from director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose distinct strangeness, humor, and style we've seen in films The Lobster and The Killing of the Sacred Deer come through in the trailer. With Lanthimos and this cast at the helm - which also includes Joe Alwyn and Mark Gatiss - consider this high at the top of my most anticipated. You'll probably have a strong reaction to it.

Billed as a bawdy, acerbic tale of royal intrigue, passion, envy and betrayal, the historical drama bears Lanthimos' unique blackly comic and bold signature. Colman stars as Queen Anne, Weisz as her adviser and lover Sarah Churchilll, and Stone as Churchill's younger cousin Abigail, who throws the relationship between Anne and Sarah upside-down. Not exactly the ideal time for levity, but this being a film from the Greek Weird Wave auteur behind Dogtooth and The Lobster, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving.

"The Favourite" stars Coleman as Queen Anne and Weisz as her close friend and advisor Lady Sarah. When a new servant named Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, Sarah takes the young girl under her wing, though Abigail soon navigates her way up the ranks of favoritism until she has the ear of Queen Anne herself. "Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfill her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way".

"The Favourite" hits Irish cinemas on 1st January, 2019.

From Searchlight, Film4 and Waypoint Entertainment, The Favourite is produced by Oscar nominee and Cannes Jury Prize victor Lanthimos along with his previous collaborators Ceci Dempsey, Ed Guiney and Lee Magiday.
