Owner Megan Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota, told NBC's "Today " that Zsa Zsa died in her sleep Tuesday.

Zsa Zsa's family drove about 30 hours to California last month to enter her in the Ugliest Dog pageant, where she beat out 13 competitors to take home the trophy and $1,500.

Although her final weeks alive were spent traveling and making television appearances, Zsa Zsa spent over half her life in a puppy mill before she was rescued by a non-profit organisation and adopted by Ms Brainard.

Zsa Zsa was named the victor of the 2018 World's Ugliest Dog contest in the San Francisco Bay Area in June.

The brown marbled bulldog named after Zsa Zsa Gabor won over judges at the famous Sonoma-Marin Fair competition with her pronounced underbite, a swaggering tongue that was usually seen lolling several inches out the right side of her mouth and signature pink nail polish. "It's probably going to be the same with her passing".

Brainard had recently brough Zsa Zsa on the Today show to celebrate her victory, just days before her sudden, devastating death. "We take millions of pictures in my family, so now we have her face everywhere to remind us of her", added Brainard.

The World's Ugliest Dog title holder died early in the morning. He says she appeared fine the day before, so it was a shock.

"She knew she was special". "She never really showed much excitement but yes, she was definitely living it up after she won".
