A homeless South Florida street artist with no arms has been charged with stabbing a Chicago tourist.

Jonathan Crenshaw, 46, held a pair of scissors with his feet and stabbed 22-year-old Cesar Coronado just after midnight early Tuesday, on South Florida, US, according to police.

Police said the victim's friend told officers that the victim was asking Jonathan Dale Crenshaw, 45, for directions when Crenshaw pulled out a sharp object and stabbed the victim.

Neither men dispute that Coronado was stabbed, but Crenshaw said he was attacked first, according to the arrest report.

Crenshaw is well-known for selling paintings drawn with his feet to tourists on Miami's Lincoln Road mall.

Coronado was found bleeding from his left arm; Crenshaw was arrested the following day and he told an officer that the stabbing happened in self-defence, the Herald reported.

The victim was treated for his injuries and Crenshaw was taken to jail and charged with aggravated battery, the report states.

Crenshaw has an extensive criminal past, including battery of law enforcement officers, according to local police.

It's believed he was born in Alabama, but it's not known whether he was born without arms or lost them later in life.
