England vs. Croatia final score, recap

Gareth Southgate will keep the faith with his first-choice XI for tonight's crucial World Cup semi-final against Croatia.

"For England to beat Croatia and reach the World Cup final, they must stop the best midfielder in the world", Jenas told BBC Sport. "It's just unbelievable to get back in the game in this way". As the rest of the Croatian squad joined the towering Mandzukic on the sidelines, the entire mass of celebrating players tumbled over the advertising boards into a dog pile, with the unfortunate press photographers on the bottom.

Football will not be coming home to England, and there will be no title to match the 1966 triumph at Wembley Stadium. Harry Kane & Co. will deal with the same disappointment that felled Shearer and Platt, Gazza and Wazza, Beckham and Gerrard. But it took just five minutes into the semi-final for Trippier to write his name on the score sheet. Kevin Trippier curled in a free kick in the fifth minute.

"We probably needed that second goal earlier in the game".

Croatia, who were beaten in extra-time by Portugal at Euro 2016, became just the second team to go to extra-time in three consecutive World Cup games.

After a goalless first 15 minutes of extra-time, and penalties looking like a big possibility, it was Croatia that ended England's dream of World Cup glory when Mario Mandzukic crept it at the far post to fire home what would ultimately be the victor.

Perisic came close again and Mandzukic had a shot saved by Pickford as Croatia pressed for the victor but it wasn't to come and the game headed into extra-time. The ball popped up and Perisic outjumped Tripper to head the ball behind the defence.

This was the biggest challenge of Jordan Henderson's career.

England will now play Belgium on July 10th in the third place playoff match, a game that could see Kane extend his personal goal tally, but is not the game he would have initially wanted to have played in.

Jesse Lingard brilliantly found Dele Alli on the edge of the box, and when the Spurs man was fouled it presented a flawless opportunity for either Trippier or Ashley Young to take an early pot at goal.

Croatia could hardly believe it after Mario Mandzukic found the back of the net in extra time to defeat England in the Fifa World Cup semifinals. Choruses of "God Save the Queen" began in England's end.

England had a good chance to double their lead in the 62nd minute but Raheem Stirling was disposed inside the six-yard box.

Defender Vrsaljko was also instrumental, clearing a shot off the line in the first half of extra time as well as setting up Perisic's equaliser.
