I am one of the world's best, says Lovren

"From my point of view, people said I had a hard season but I don't agree with that", he told BeIN Sports after beating England.

Croatia and Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren claims that he should be regarded as one of the best defenders in world football having reached the World Cup final.

"I would say we have good mothers and fathers, they are making good love I would say", he joked.

Lovren can have his off days - he was terrorised by Romelu Lukaku at Old Trafford in March too - but there is something to be said for a player who has reached both the Champions League final and World Cup final within three months.

"I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense", he told BeIN Sports.

This victory over England led Croatia to their first World Cup final and Mario Mandzukic's extra-time victor sealed Croatia's third consecutive win in extra-time or penalties, having beaten Denmark and Russian Federation in penalty shootouts in the previous two rounds.

Croatia made history by surpassing the 1998 team that lost in the semi- finals.

We will never forget this.

"We will never forget this". We beat our record from 20 years ago. We showed our character, we showed that we deserved to be in the final and people should respect us.

If Lovren and his team-mates can control Mbappe and manage the alternative threats of Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann on Sunday in Moscow, Croatia will have a genuine chance of pulling off a victory.

"It was tough first half".

But after the break, Croatia took control, equalised through Ivan Perisic and then won the game with Mario Mandzukic's extra-time strike.
