India vs England Ist ODI Preview

For now, Root is concentrating on three matches against India, ranked number two in the world and who showed their class in their T20I series victory. "I know it was a very different side they played against but it is a really good marker to see where we are", said Root on Wednesday.

Apart from gauging the English conditions, India would also like to get to the Top Spot in ODI Rankings which would be an added incentive for them to perform in the series.

"In the past year or so we have played some good cricket, in and out of India, this tour brings another challenge for us".

Joe Root remains confident he can carve out a future as a T20 player despite being dropped from the England side. "You see guys come back from those tournaments with a huge amount of experience and a rounded way of looking at the game; a different take on certain aspects". "It's been slightly frustrating on occasions, it's not quite materialised how I would have liked but when you win 5-0 [against Australia], you've got no complaints", he said.

Personally, Root will be under pressure to prove whether he has the game for limited overs.

He "fully understood" the decision to leave him out in Bristol, however, but admitted his lack of opportunities to play T20 cricket has been "difficult".

Yet, so determined was Root not to miss out on the short-form game and all the rewards that come with it, he convinced management he still had a role to play even though England have an embarrassment of big-hitting riches.

"Until there's a really good block for me to go and play T20 cricket somewhere in a domestic tournament, it's going to be hard for me to get a string of games together and really put that case across". Whether that's making sure I get enough rest, or obviously if there are worldwide games throughout those tournaments, I'm going to have to miss out.

"I think it is unsafe to start thinking too far ahead (in terms of predicting high scores)". It's a great opportunity for us to play against a strong Indian team that will pose different challenge to what Australia posed at the start of the summer, their bowling attack for example. One thing that generally we have been good at last couple of years is assessing things early on and planning an innings from there.

Now, after scoring just 61 runs off 54 balls in four Twenty20 internationals, Root and England need to consider whether his omission is just temporary or whether it is in everyone's best interests for it to become permanent.
