One firefighter dead after explosion in downtown Sun Prairie

At least five firefighters, a police officer and six others were hurt in the explosion, which happened about 45 minutes after first responders were alerted to the smell of gas around a main line operated by We Energies, a private operator, Konopacki said.

Lt. Kevin Konopacki with the Sun Prairie Police Department said, "The response from this community's been fantastic and it's not coming up and saying, 'Hey, what's going on?"

Captain Barr was caught in the explosion as he was working to evacuate people from the area, Fire Chief Chris Garrison said during a news conference Wednesday evening.

The contractor that caused the leak isn't affiliated with We Energies, company spokeswoman Amy Jahns told CNN affiliate WMTV.

Flames were spotted late Wednesday night at Glass Nickel Pizza, one of the buildings heavily damaged by Tuesday's natural gas explosion.

Authorities evacuated buildings within a half-mile (0.8 kilometre) radius from the centre of the explosion in Sun Prairie, which has about 32,800 residents and is less than 15 miles (25 kilometres) from the state capital of Madison.

The Red Cross reported it was setting up a reception area for evacuees at Sun Prairie High School. They own a business down the street from the Barr House.

"He was very, very proud of Sun Prairie and the community he lived in", DePula said.
