The more we find out about Sacha Baron Cohen's new secret project, the more people are getting excited ... and maybe a little creeped out.

A teaser trailer for the show has been posted on Twitter earlier today, showing US Vice President Dick Cheney autographing a torture device.

After having dropped a couple of intriguing promos, Showtime has officially announced that Cohen's new series is titled Who Is America? and will premiere in the United States on July 15 at 10 pm.

"Sacha is a comedic genius who shocks you with his audacity, bravery and inventiveness", said David Nevins, president and CEO of Showtime Networks, in a statement. "Sacha Baron Cohen go to school, learn about being amusing, you don't know s***".

Really, though, it would actually be kind of astounding if Cohen managed to pull off a Bruno-style man-on-the-street mockumentary-much less without anyone noticing-in the age of social media and camera phones. The network has touted the show as "the most risky ... in the history of television" and called Cohen's latest character "shameless" and "unhinged".

Not only that, but he gets Cheney to sign a "waterboarding kit" in the clip for the series, which premieres on July 15th.

His award winning 2006 faux-documentary film Borat, in which he played an anti-Semitic reporter from Kazakhstan who interacts with real Americans unaware they were being set up, earned some US$261 million (RM1.05 billion) at the global box office.

Last week, however, Cohen resurfaced on Twitter and posted a video of Trump urging him to "go to school, learn about being amusing".

"Who Is America?" is created and executive produced by Baron Cohen and is also executive produced by Anthony Hines, Todd Schulman, Andrew Newman, Dan Mazer and Adam Lowitt.

On July 4, Cohen tweeted a similarly puzzling video that included footage of Donald Trump insulting him. "That's the first time I've ever signed a waterboard", he says.

Famed for his provocative baiting of the general public and public figures with a number of outrageous characters, the comedian is returning with a new 7-part TV series - which starts next week.
