He said: 'I am looking forward to greeting Mr Trump on behalf of the UK Government when he arrives in Scotland on Friday.

Prior to coming to London, the president claimed a personal victory at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit after telling European allies to increase spending or lose Washington's support.

Theresa May will be seeking to improve her often publicly strained relationship with Donald Trump as she pushes for a post-Brexit trade deal with America during his visit to Britain.

The trip coincides with a tumultuous week for May after two senior ministers resigned in protest at her plans for trade with the European Union after Britain leaves next March. The visit is seen as crucial at setting the course for a closer trading relationship between the two countries.

"Boris Johnson's a friend of mine, he's been very nice to me, very supportive and maybe I'll speak to him when I get over there".

"I just want the people to be happy".

A giant six-metre-high blimp of Trump depicted as an orange baby in nappies is also expected to fly over the capital.

Trump also shrugged off mass protests planned in Britain against his visit starting later Thursday and called the country "a pretty hot spot" over the cabinet resignations.

Trump has clashed in the past with May - even though she is a conservative who shares his view that defense spending should be raised - and with her predecessor, David Cameron, who challenged Trump's anti-Muslim campaign stance as "divisive, stupid and wrong".

Labour Party legislator Paul Flynn, who has criticized Trump in Parliament, says Trump has outraged Britons - and people around the world - with his harsh treatment of immigrants. Both of those accords were the result of years of painstaking diplomacy by European leaders - and Trump unilaterally trashed them.

Nick Hurd, Britain's Policing Minister, told parliament police expected more than 100 protests across the country, including two large demonstrations in London on Friday, and there were robust and proportionate plans in place.

A campaign is also underway to get "American Idiot", a 2004 song by the USA punk rock band Green Day, to the top of the UK Singles Chart.

The couple will attend a dinner, hosted by Mrs May, at Blenheim Palace - the ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill - on Thursday evening.

Along with trade and security links, Downing Street said key areas to be discussed between the two leaders included Russia, Brexit and the Middle East.

From there, Trump and his wife Melania are expected to travel to Windsor to meet Queen Elizabeth.

After London, he will travel to Scotland and then onto Helsinki to meet with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
