Not much else is known about the Downton Abbey movie, but it's assumed that the story will pick up sometime after the 2015 series finale, which featured a flurry of happy endings: Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) got married, Isobel (Penelope Wilton) and Lord Merton (Douglas Reith) looked happier together than ever, and Daisy Mason (Sophie McShera) and Andy (Michael Fox) carried on their romance.

Carnival Films and Focus Features have announced that shooting is set to take place this summer at Highclerc Castle, the 17th-century estate which served as the setting for the aristocratic Crawley family's titular home. The film will be penned by Downton creator Julian Fellowes, who will also produce alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge. Plot details are being kept under wraps. There was an announcement that the movie was supposed to start filming in September 2017, but it seems like this time, the show's producers mean it.

Gareth Neame, the film's producer, said, "Now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production".

The series garnered numerous awards including a trio of Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, a Special BAFTA award. Downton is the most nominated non-U.S. television show in the history of the Emmys. Most notably, it gave Dame Maggie Smith a second career wind, as she played the juicy role of the acid-tongued Dowager Countess, Violet Crawley.

The official Twitter account for the series broke the news over social media to "cordially invite" fans to see the film, which will be screened in cinemas.

It was first reported that a movie adaptation was in the works past year.
