Which isn't almost enough time for people to stop freaking out about the discovery that they share the planet with a gargantuan lizard.

"Rodan's been kind of a sidekick character, but I've always had a soft spot for him" says Dougherty. He's like this winged A-bomb.

In addition to the images, Dougherty also shared some info on King of the Monsters including whether or not it sets up the blockbuster mega-showdown Godzilla vs. Kong. "I think we've done him justice".

The 2019 sequel to Gareth Edwards' 2014 Godzilla film will show what's happened five years after the last time Godzilla terrorized the world, but this time he'll have some other well-known monsters along for the battle - specifically, King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan.

"Not without giving away too much", the director joked when asked for more details about the power.

"It takes place at a very key moment and it's a sort of call to arms", he said.

The film will feature Kyle Chandler as a scientist and Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown as his family members with Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, Elizabeth Ludlow, Randy Havens, Sally Hawkins, O'Shea Jackson, Jr., Bradley Whitford, Zhang Ziyi, and Ken Watanabe rounding out the cast. The pair are kidnapped by what Dougherty describes as "a mysterious organization, with their own plans for the creatures". Trick "r Treat filmmaker Michael Dougherty is in the director's chair this time around, and an nearly entirely new cast is in front of the camera save for Monarch members played by Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins".

Dougherty also revealed there is a connection to the next film, Godzilla vs King Kong.

The first photos from 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' has leaked, and it looks like this might be a pretty epic monster movie, all told.

"It's not like we're bending over backwards to introduce Kong, but there's definitely some bread crumbs", Dougherty says of references to Kong.
