The social media post quickly led to accusations of Islamophobia, with Sadiq Khan calling on the Tory party to take action against the backbencher, who has represented Lichfield in Staffordshire since 1997, and MP Wes Streeting saying he has written to the Conservative chief whip, Julian Smith, about the incident.

Conservative MP Michael Fabricant has been accused of Islamophobia and racism after he tweeted a photoshopped picture of a balloon version of London mayor Sadiq Khan having sex with a balloon pig over the Houses of Parliament as Donald Trump laughs.

It comes after Mr Fabricant criticised the decision to fly a "Trump Baby blimp" above Parliament Square in protest at the USA president's visit to the UK.

Miqdad Versi, the assistant secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, has said that he is appalled at the picture tweeted by the Tory MP, and asks "What will @BrandonLewis do about #ToryIslamophobia?"

The tweet, which has since been deleted, showed an image of Khan mounted by a pig.

Fabricant later said, 'I did not even see there was a face on the pig.

'I am genuinely sorry if it caused anyone offence and I am disappointed in the person who sent it to me in the first place'. This followed on from my remarks on TV about the hypocrisy of the anti-Trump demos and the ridiculous blimp.

'I'm sick of the Mayor's religion being used as a punchline and punchbag by racists and bigots, ' he said.

Labour's Chuka Umunna said that the image was evidence the Conservatives have a problem with Islamophobia.

Trump supporter Mr Fabricant shared the tweet, commenting: "Well, what can I say".

Afzal Khan MP called for Mr Fabricant to be suspended immediately over the "abhorrent" tweet. They are from some of the countries where I had work visits in the 1980s'.

The Channel 4 News fact checking account tweeted at the MP: "Hi Mike Fabricant, what is this flag on your mantelpiece?" Tory members, the former chair of the party @SayeedaWarsi, and the @MuslimCouncil have all called for an inquiry into Islamaphobia (sic).
