FX's true crime dramatization "The Assassination of Gianni Versace" led the limited series category with 18 nominations, including a best actor nod for Darren Criss who plays the killer of the gay Italian fashion designer.

Game of Thrones led all shows with 22 nominations, but that number is actually a drop from the last two times the HBO show was eligible.

As a matter of fact, Netflix beat out HBO for the first time in almost 20 years for the most Emmy nominations.

HBO is no piker: It claimed 108 bids.

While there was a major turnover in the best comedy series category this year, helped by the absence of three-time victor Veep and also involving the snub of five-time victor Modern Family, an even bigger seismic shift happened last year in the best drama series field. "Atlanta" will face newcomers including "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, " "Glow" and "Barry". Silicon Valley and Curb Your Enthusiasm grabbed seven and four nominations each.

The variety series category also left "The Tonight Show" on the sidelines for the second consecutive year, deservedly so, given that Jimmy Fallon's brand of vanilla-flavored latenight comedy feels a little too tepid for the times.

The short-lived revival of "Roseanne", cancelled because of star Roseanne Barr's racist tweet, drew only one major nomination, a supporting actress nod for Laurie Metcalf. She added a postscript: "I think my mother at this moment may actually be satisfied". It is also his first Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 25 years.

"We have some seriously special people on our staff and hearing them go insane in the office right now is just the medicine this world needs".

But the scandal appeared not to have tainted much-admired Tony victor and Oscar nominee Laurie Metcalf, Roseanne's sister Jackie in the show, who picked up her eighth nomination. "There's still a lot of work to be done in terms of gender" and with behind-the-camera jobs, he said.

Ted Danson earned a surprise nomination on Thursday for his stellar performance as Michael on NBC's beloved comedy, The Good Place, in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category. NBC's Saturday Night Live, with 21 nominations this year, has now been nominated 252 times in its history, a record for any show. Colin Jost and Michael Che will host.

The fantasy dragons-and-swords saga, which already has 38 Emmys under its belt, is not expected back on screens until next year.
