Netflix is the most nominated network, with 112 - breaking a 17-year streak at the top for HBO.

The newbie comedies aced out long-time Emmy favourite "Modern Family", a five-time victor and perennial nominee since it debuted in 2009 on ABC.

While there was a major turnover in the best comedy series category this year, helped by the absence of three-time victor Veep and also involving the snub of five-time victor Modern Family, an even bigger seismic shift happened last year in the best drama series field. The two drama series picked up 13 and 12 nods respectively, and both were recognized in the coveted top drama category.

Glover lands four nominations including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for his work in FX's "Atlanta", which is this year's most-nominated comedy series with 16 nominations.

A slew of first time Emmy contenders included Sandra Oh as the first Asian-American lead comedy actress nominee for her role in quirky spy series "Killing Eve", and Rachel Brosnahan's 1950s housewife turned comedian in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".

One show that stars a pair of local natives and has been nominated in the past was shut out in every major category. Another revival, "Will & Grace", got Emmy love for nominees Megan Mullally and Molly Shannon but the main stars and series itself were snubbed.

Top of the Lake: China Girl, shot in Sydney, also missed out in other categories, including best limited TV series, while lead actress Elisabeth Moss failed to earn a nomination. "We're grateful to all our nominees for making this the eighth year we've had 100 nominations or more".

The fantasy dragons-and-swords saga, which already has 38 Emmys under its belt, is not expected back on screens until next year.

The dystopian sci-fi series drew 20 bids, including one for last year's best actress victor, Elisabeth Moss, and supporting bids for Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes. It was followed by NBC's CMSCA.O sketch show "Saturday Night Live" and HBO's sci-fi series "Westworld" with 21 nominations each, and Hulu's dystopian vision "The Handmaid's Tale" with 20. "Everybody from the composer to the makeup people to everyone, so it's such a team effort".
