The closures will leave the Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, as the final one still operating in the US.

The owner of the Alaska stores had told Deadline that the stores remained profitable, but decided that renewing the lease on the stores didn't make financial sense.

Both stores will close their doors on Monday with plans to reopen for an inventory sale starting at noon Tuesday that will run through July and August, according to a statement on the Blockbuster official Facebook page. "If you'd asked me 14 years ago, there's no way I'd thought we'd be the last one".

"You would not believe how much business we got just from that memorabilia alone", he said.

"These are the last two Blockbuster stores in Alaska that survived and it is sad to say goodbye to our dedicated customers". What a great time to build your media library and share some Blockbuster memories with us.

"We were very up front with them, and they said, 'That's OK, we want you to have it anyway, ' " he said. Its fellow OR stores, in Redmond and Sandy, have closed in recent months.

The closures come just two months after the host of HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" sent a jockstrap worn by Russell Crowe in the 2005 movie "Cinderella Man" to the Anchorage store, which displayed it in an effort to ramp up business.

"Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years", the post continued.

Comedian John Oliver actually tried to save the struggling Alaska Blockbusters this past April in a amusing campaign that included Russell Crowe's jock strap. Unfortunately, the stunt did not manage to save the stores.

Most pundits assumed Blockbuster locations in Alaska would remain open due to poor broadband coverage. But Blockbuster faithfuls knew it could never replace the authenticity of a physical store. There's even a parody account on Twitter claiming to be "The Last Blockbuster", but until yesterday there were actually still three remaining. Pledging to donate the items to a worthy cause, Oliver zeroed in on two of the last remaining Blockbusters, located in Alaska, promising that if one of them contacted the show, they could display the memorabilia in their store.

Ever since the mid-2000s, Blockbuster has struggled to compete with Netflix and other streaming services. In September 2010 it filed for bankruptcy and has spent the past eight years closing down stores across the world.
