Trump scuppers trade deal with United Kingdom under May's Brexit

The President and his First Lady were met on the tarmac by US Ambassador Woody Johnson and UK Trade Secretary Liam Fox before he was whisked off to Johnson's house near Regent's Park.

Mr Trump and his wife Melania landed at Stansted on Air Force One at 1.50pm local time before a helicopter took them to the United States ambassador's residence in London.

That matters because the government has been clinging to the idea of trade deals with countries outside the European Union as one of the benefits of Brexit, and claiming that the choice in the Chequers deal to stay close to the European Union doesn't exclude those opportunities.

John Rees of the Stop the War group said in reference to Trump: "He's a wrecking ball for race relations, he's a wrecking ball for prosperity, he's a wrecking ball for women's rights, he's a wrecking ball for any peace and justice in this world and we have to stop him". "I think he (Khan) has done a very bad job on terrorism", Trump told The Sun newspaper. "I disagree with their views as well but letting them protest should not mean endorsing their views".

President Donald Trump says he used to like London a lot.

Mr Trump has recently been under fire for his own immigration policy, which resulted in the separation of immigrant families. After a tumultuous couple years for the "special relationship" between the US and her closet ally, tested repeatedly by disagreements, the frustration at the street level with Mr. Trump's policies, style and manner manifested Thursday in some demonstrations.

His visit comes as the government published its plans for the UK's relations with the European Union after Brexit.

Earlier this week Mr Trump said it was "up to the people" whether the prime minister stayed on after two cabinet ministers resigned over her Brexit policy.

The Sun said its interview with Trump was conducted in Brussels, where the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit was held earlier in the week.

Trump is due to stay overnight at Winfield House, where demonstrators plan to play recordings of migrant children held in United States detention centres.

Yet Trump's schedule will largely keep him out of central London.

Vince Cable, the leader of the pro-EU Liberal Democrats, said, "Most of us don't think he is particularly good judge on Brexit or anything else". When he leaves Britain on Sunday, after a trip to Scotland where he owns two golf courses, he heads to Helsinki for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mr Trump was scathing about the white paper Brexit deal put forward by Mrs May, but nice about her on a personal level. She does everything in public to avoid one.

The couples clasped hands in greeting and then stood on the steps of the house as a military band played Amazing Grace in front of the VIP crowd made up of business leaders and senior politicians. This part of the visit is being considered private.

But trip planners may go out of their way to shield Trump from viewing another aspect of the greeting: an oversized balloon depicting the president as an angry baby in a diaper that will be flown from London's Parliament Square during what are expected to be massive gatherings of protesters opposed to Trump's presence.

The president also returned to his feud with the London mayor Sadiq Khan, who he previously sparred with via Twitter in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on London in 2017.
